Develop informants, says DGP

Last Updated 31 October 2009, 18:19 IST

"Be innovative and develop 'informants' at every level so that we don't regret later. Let us go all out in winning public confidence and keep the tag 'Karnataka police are people-friendly', the Director General and Inspector General of Police, Ajai Kumar Singh, told senior police officers at a review meeting here on Saturday.

Later, briefing mediapersons, the DGP said Bangalore is  a nerve centre and any untoward incidents that take place are reflected in the remote corners of the State. “In this situation, we need to be more vigilant, sensible and careful in handling things,” he said.

After the Mumbai terror attacks, the public were asking where were the police. That situation should not arise. It is better that each division, sub-division, zonal and police station develops its own network of informants and standby assistance where public will be involved so that we are geared up in case of any eventuality and there is no need to wait for the paramedical forces to arrive, Ajai Kumar Singh said.
Stressing the need for prevention and detection of crime, DGP advised his subordinates to book cases on receivers - people who receive stolen property. Whether they receive the stolen booty intentionally or unintentionally, it is time to register cases on the receivers. When receivers turn down robbers, the crime rate is bound to fall.

Contest to tap talent

To tap the latent talents in the department -- constables, head constables and assistant sub-Inspectors who are regularly in touch with the pubic and their grievances will be given an opportunity to come out with their experiences in dealing with criminal and unlawful activities. Plans are on to conduct regular prize money essay competitions for the grass root level constabulary on various topics -- maintenance of law and order, communal harmony and traffic management.

To motivate team building at various levels, award and rewards are to be introduced - Best detection award, return of property. The reward carries a cash prize, shield and a citation to each sub-division and police station. Likewise, apart from annual sports, zonal and divisional-level sports will also be conducted, said DGP.

Every department official has the right to avail weekly offs and casual leaves, he observed.
