A traffic police head constable was slapped and his uniform was torn by a drunken youth in Lajpat Nagar, police said on Saturday.

The accused, Akash Jain, a resident of Kailash Hills in East of Kailash, has been arrested. Police said the incident happened when head constable Tarachand, stationed with south-east zone PCR van unit, was on duty on Thursday.

At 9.30 pm, Tarachand’s PCR van got a call of a scuffle near Kasturba Niketan in Lajpat Nagar. “The head constable later contacted a person named Gangu, who informed that the scuffle broke out over money taken on loan by a person named Sonu,” a police officer said.

Tarachand and other policemen went to the spot and found Akash consuming alcohol in a car. It is claimed that Akash began to abuse Tarachand when he was confronted. “In a fit of rage, Akash slapped Tarachand and tore his uniform in full public view. He is also accused of threatening Tarachand,” the officer added.
Police said Akash also abused others in the PCR van who came to help Tarachand.
“Akash then tried to flee in his car, but could not succeed due to traffic. He was subsequently arrested with the help of locals,” the officer said.

A case under the Indian Penal Code and the Delhi Excise Act has been filed with Lajpat Nagar police station. Akash faces charges of assault, act endangering life and obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions.

Sources said Akash was previously arrested for stalking a woman who was living with her family in Lajpat Nagar. He was granted bail in March on the condition that he will not try to contact her.
