Last Updated 10 June 2013, 20:47 IST

After being left with no other option but to surrender before the police, a 25-year-old chain-snatcher grievously wounded a chasing constable and later shot himself dead outside a flat where he had holed himself up in Narela on Monday.

The police had cornered the youth after giving him a hot chase, which turned violent when the snatcher fired a shot at one of the three chasing constables.

The injured policeman is critical and battling for life. The bike-borne accused, identified as Kuldeep, a resident of Narela, and his accomplice were hunting for a victim. When they reached Satyawadi Raja Harish Chandra Hospital at Narela, they waylaid a scooterist Umesh Gupta, a resident of the area, snatched his gold chain and sped away.

Gupta raised an alarm. Two patrol policemen – Prabhat and Kishore – of Narela police station gave Kuldeep a hot chase on their bike.

The policemen alerted their colleague on wireless and another constable, Satendra, joined the the chase. After a hot pursuit for a kilometre, Kuldeep’s bike skidded and he fell at Shiv Bazar.

While his accomplice fled, constable Satender grabbed Kuldeep by the collar. The outlaw fired at the cop and a bullet hit his neck.

While cop Prabhat rushed Satender to hospital, Kishore went on chasing.
