Veteran theatre and film artiste B Jayashree was felicitated by the federation of theatre troupes and theatre personalities at a ceremony organised at the Ravindra Kalakshetra recently.

The event, called Savirada Sharanavva, saw many theatre  lovers coming together.

In the last five decades, B Jayashree has been the symbol of the evolution of
theatre in Karnataka. Well-known groups like Benaka, Nataranga, Rangasampada and Spandana have featured her in their productions. She has also acted in plays such as ‘Mother’, Jokumaraswamy, Tingara Buddanna etc. She is also involved in directing plays and has given her voice to many heroines.

At the event, when she sang some folk numbers, the hall resounded with her deep voice. Her renditions Srigajavadana and Thaye were enjoyed thoroughly
by the audience.

“I have seen many of her plays in the past and love her work. She is an extremely
dynamic person not only on stage but off it too. She essays all kinds of roles with a lot of ease and some of the characters that she has played are very touching. She is one of my favourites when it comes to Kannada plays and literature,” says Nagendra, a
member of the audience.

Many were seen appreciating her efforts in reviving Kannada theatre and literature. “She has done a lot in popularising Kannada theatre. The reason why I started getting interested in theatre was because of her,” says Ravi K, who was there at the programme.
