Awareness walk and street plays were organised on the occasion of World Elder Abuse and Awareness Day at Lalbagh by Elders Helpline — a joint project of Bangalore City Police and Nightingales Medical Trust.

Over 100 people took part in the event expressing support and care towards the elderly citizens.

Elder abuse is a global social issue which affects the health and human rights of millions of older persons around the world, and is an issue which deserves the attention of international community," said  Nightingales Medical Trust Managing Trustee Ratha S Murton.

While the awareness walk was held from Lalbagh East Gate to Nightingales Sandhya Kirana — a daycare centre at Richmond Town, streetplays revolving around elder abuse and the recent incident of 91-year-old man, Ananthaiah Shetty, who was chained by his own son, was portrayed at various locations of the City.

“Through studies, we have come to know that about 40 per cent of elders experience abuse in some way or the other in City. So far 7,133 cases have been reported at Elders Helpline and 3,545 cases successfully resolved through counselling, legal advice or other appropriate actions," added Murthy.
