A 60-year-old man was killed when he tried to stop a quarrel between his son and a  nephew outside his home in Rohtash Nagar area in Shahdara, police said on Monday.

Rajendra Kumar was declared brought dead at Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital at around 5 pm on Sunday, police said.

The victim's son Kaushal Kumar – who works in a private company and lived there with his parents and a younger brother and a sister – told police how the fight began.

“On Sunday evening, when he was taking his bike out of the house, a slipper fell near him from the first floor. He saw his cousin Naveen standing on the first floor,” said a police officer. Naveen and Kaushal began arguing.

Seeing this, Kaushal’s uncle Krishan Kumar came out and tried to pacify Naveen, but he continued hurling abuses. Naveen’s father Murli Dhar Kumar too came out.

Meanwhile, Rajendra Kumar came there, appealing to Naveen to end the fight and asking his own son to leave.

But Naveen turned aggressive and allegedly pushed Rajendra Kumar to the ground.
The elderly man managed to stand up and moved towards his room, but collapsed there. He started vomiting and lost consciousness, said the officer.

Kaushal and other family members rushed him to the hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. The doctors said that he might have died of a heart attack but the exact reason will be known only after autopsy.

A case under section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) has been registered at Shahdara police station against Naveen.

Police said Naveen fled from home after getting to know about Rajendra Kumar’s death.

“We are looking for the accused and questioning his family members for his hideouts,” said the officer.
