Flea Market

There's something for everyone

Youngsters welcomed the second edition of ‘Souk On The Move’, a flea
market that isn’t restricted to Bangalore but travels to other cities. Held recently at Opus, it had a variety of stalls, musical performances and even a fashion show for up-and-coming designers.

Spread across two days, it had kitschy photo frames, dream-catchers, clothes, jewellery, paintings, shoes, bags and even toys for children on display. “The bazaar aims to create an opportunity for young and upcoming designers to showcase their work while keeping visitors entertained for the whole day,” said Saloni, who organised the event along with Deepika and Brinda. In keeping with this philosophy, there were some of the usual stalls one can find at flea markets in the City alongside fresh, new products worth checking out.

The stalls on the first day were replaced by new ones on the second, which added to the assortment and shopping experience. The beer games were a big hit, while performances by bands like ‘One Nite Stand’, ‘Tidal Wave’, ‘Polly Wants A Cracker’ and the DJ set by Vachan had everybody grooving.

“It was a great experience since it was such a playful environment. I wasn’t stressed about my models walking the ramp since everyone was just in a mood to enjoy,” shared designer Runkee Sinha, who showcased her ethnic wear collection at the fashion show. She added, “I wasn’t expecting on-the-spot sales since I specialise in customised garments. But I did get a couple of orders.” For the crowd, the flea market made for an interesting way to spend a weekend. There were some who walked in and out across the two days; others stayed there throughout. “It feels good to see so much effort being put into handmade work and encouragement being given to capsule businesses that don’t have a store. It’s a good platform and being an artist myself, I’m thinking of showcasing my own work in the next edition,” said Surya Tikekar, a visitor, adding, “it’s a happy environment with a great vibe and a perfect place to chill on a weekend.”
