On the wings of imagination

The students of JD Institute of Fashion Technology presented a glamorous exhibition of their creativity at a fashion show held at a City hotel recently. The theme of the show was ‘Imagination 2013-Unfollow’, wherein students had to use their creativity and not follow a particular trend. Innovative and different yet stylish, the students portrayed various trends, silhouettes as well as colours. They worked around the theme wonderfully and used different drapes to bring out their thoughts and ideas.

Akshata Gadennavar, a final-year BSc (Fashion Designing) student, was inspired by a chef and the colours and textures that he uses to enhance the pallette. “I am inspired by Grant Achatz, the chef who breaks every convention possible. I have attempted to create a collection which is avant-garde. It is for the generation which does not miss the dessert even if it skips the main course. I am also inspired by brands such as Chanel,” she says.

Many others were inspired by famous painters and popular trends. The designs were chic and the show was well organised. The clothes brought in a breath of fresh air and the future fashion designers of the country put in a lot of effort to make their collection stand out. Models walked the ramp in short skirts, ankle-length trousers in different colours, party-wear in different hues and cocktail dresses.

Sneha SK, a final-year student, was thrilled that her designs were being showcased and wants to start her own label in the future. Her garments were based on the paintings of MF Hussain. “His paintings are striking and very deeply rooted in the Indian culture. He used a lot of lines to define his paintings and played with broad lines and a wide palette of colours. I have adapted his most powerful motif, the horse, and made it into a leopard in my collection. All my garments have an outline as he did in his paintings,” she explains.

Many others decided to use their creativity to highlight a particular trend. One of the students designed her entire collection on the colour of love. However, she changed the colour of love from red to blue. “In my collection, I have advocated the tranquil turquoise blue over the passionate red. It is different and I have made skirts, dresses etc,” says Nancy.
