Of the 2,827 Anganawadi centres in the district, 324 of them are being operated from houses or verandahs, while 51 centres are being operated from temples. This was revealed at the Karnataka Development Programme (KDP) meeting held at Zilla Panchayat premises on Friday.

Though 1,793 Anganawadi’s have their own buildings, 104 centres operated from Panchayat buildings, 243 at community halls, 138 at additional class rooms in government schools and 168 of them from rented building, informed officials of the department of Women and Child Welfare at the meeting.

Revenue Minister V Srinivas Prasad instructed the officials to use the funds allotted to Taluk Panchayats under 13th Finance Commission, and MP and MLA funds to construct buildings to Anganawadi’s which lacked a permanent building.

MLA Vasu, speaking at the meeting, said that government PU and degree colleges in the district did not have enough rooms as per UGC regulations. UGC has set a limit of 60 students per classroom.

However, colleges are found to accommodate more than 90 students per classroom, due to shortage of rooms. Appropriate measures should be taken to provide enough classrooms in government colleges of the district, he said.

Right to Education

At the meeting, Deputy Director of Public Instruction, B K Basavaraju said that barring 18 schools, all the schools have implemented RTE in the district.

The DDPI said that the 18 schools had filed a writ petition in the court, due to which implementation of the Act had been stalled.

Srinivas Prasad criticised the attitude of private educational institutes in the district. He instructed DC and DDPI to convene a meeting to chalk out admission regulations and implement steps to control fees at private schools in the district.

On Mysore slipping to 20th place in SSLC rankings, the DDPI said that the ranking was hit by poor results in Nanjangud taluk, which recorded a pass percentage of 70 per cent, as against above 80 per cent in remaining taluks.

CESC woes

At the meeting, officials from Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC) complained that ‘unauthorised connections’ by farmers could not be controlled. They said that transformers, electric wires and electric poles are bought from the open market and installed without permission. They recalled instances of man-handling of CESC officials from farmers. DC Ramegowda said that a separate meeting would be convened to discuss the issue, after which appropriate measures will be initiated.
Rs one rice

On the introduction of Rs one rice, department of Food and Civil Supplies, officials informed that there were about six lakh BPL card holders in the district. As many as 50,000 applications have been received online. Srinivas Prasad, who is also the district in-charge minister instructed the officials to ensure that there is no ‘misuse’ of the one kg rice per rupee scheme.
