The State government will soon form an independent physiotherapy council, Health minister U T Khader said here on Sunday.

A committee will be formed to establish the said council and it will take appropriate decisions, Khader said in his address to the state physiotherapy conference organised by the Bangalore Physiotherapist Network (BPN) which had made a request in that regard to the government.

The minister also directed Dhanya Kumar, the Director of Health and Family Welfare, to recruit BPTs (Bachelors of Physiotherapy) and MPTs (Masters of Physiotherapy) as physiotherapists from now on, instead of DPT holders (Diploma in Physiotherapy).

According to physiotherapist Suresh Reddy, the Health Department earlier recruited DPT but the course has been scrapped as there are no takers. The health minister had addressed well their request on recruiting highly-qualified BPTs and MPTs for the vacant posts, Reddy added.

Khader is also keen on organising state-level workshops for physiotherapists to ensure their technological advancement and provide better service to the public.

Kumar said that more physiotherapists would be recruited in government hospitals in taluks and districts as the shortage of adequate staff hindered the efficiency of service.
