The Zilla Panchayat launched a drive to admit the children who are deprived of education in slum areas, to schools.

Around four children were admitted to school from Nittur and Beedangudde slum areas. Zilla Panchayat CEO Prabhakar Sharma said that the drive has been taken up in the slum dwellings so as to educate children in the slum areas. He said there are three categories of children who miss education. The first category includes children who do not go to schools and engage in child labour and sometimes in minor thefts. Most of these children are stealing fishes in Malpe port. The second category involves the children who remain in houses to take care of their siblings.

The third category includes those who get admitted to schools, but do not turn up. The parents of these children are convinced and were asked to send their kids to schools. The children who want accommodation are provided with hostel facilities.

The CEO added that there are kids below three years who do not attend anganwadi centres. Most of them are admitted to anganwadi centres, but do not turn up. The inhabitants here have also told about their grievances against Anganawadi workers who do not pay attention to slum dwellings.

Many pregnant women are not provided with nutritious food. The issue will be inquired, he added.

The drive is launched in all the three taluks of the district. Udupi BEO Vasanth Shetty said that around three children were caught from Beedangudde slum area.
