Average asset of Cong MP is Rs 6.8 crore

With as many as 300 crorepatis making their way to the 15th Lok Sabha—up 95 per cent from 154 in the last House—average assets for MPs for most parties have increased this time.

The average asset for a Congress MP in 2004 was Rs 3.4 crore. It is Rs 6.8 crore now, according to a survey prepared by the voluntary organisation National Election Watch (NEW). For the BJP, it rose from Rs 1.2 crore to Rs 3.6 crore.

Analysing the affidavits of the candidates, the survey said while the average assets for a Congress MP in 2004 was Rs 3,38,32,415, it grew to Rs 6,86,68,641 in 2009.

Even though the assets of an average CPM MP is meagre compared to their colleagues in the Congress and the BJP, the figure has shown a substantial increase, from Rs 20 lakhs in 2004 to Rs 39 lakhs now.
The wealthiest MP in the new House is Namma Nageswara Rao of the TDP, elected from Khammam in Andhra Pradesh, who has assets worth Rs 173 crore. Next comes Congress member Naveen Jindal from Kurukshetra with Rs 131 crore.
