Shift 142 bus stops, police urge BBMP

Last Updated 17 July 2013, 20:34 IST

The City police have requested the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to shift 142 bus stops located near traffic junctions as they cause congestion, Commissioner of Police Raghavendra Auradkar said here on Wednesday.

“Some bus stops, especially in the Central Business District (CBD), are unscientifically built close to traffic signals. Even policemen struggle to ease traffic when buses stop abruptly there,” Auradkar said in his address to the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI).

Police have also identified more than 16,000 potholes across the City. “As we know, the BBMP has begun taking action on the basis of our reports,” he added.

Auradkar said the burden of police personnel, who work for about 17 hours daily without a weekly off, should be eased. The force has just 25 per cent manpower. Neighbourhood watch or traffic wardens could be of help. The FKCCI members suggested they would hire home guards at their industrial and commercial establishments. The top cop supported electronic surveillance at police stations. “We cannot function under isolation. We are open to monitoring the conduct of our own personnel,” he added.
