Qualifier Kanika Vaidya underlined her growing stature on the circuit with a 6-0, 6-3 demolition of second-seeded Rishika Sunkara and entered her maiden singles final in the ONGC $10,000 ITF women’s tournament at the Delhi Lawn Tennis Association (DLTA) complex on Friday.
Under hot and humid conditions, Kanika, a Singapore native of Indian origin, gave a convincing display of power to romp to the title clash where she meets top-seeded Ankita Raina. Ankita outpaced Natasha Palha 6-2, 6-3. However, Ankita could not replicate her morning success in the doubles final later in the day. The pairing of Sharmada Balu and Sowjanya Bavisetti defeated Ankita and her partner Shweta Rana 6-2, 6-4 for the title victory.
