Barcel-ona coach Tito Vilanova is to step down due to ill health, Sport, El Mundo Deportivo and other Spanish media reported on Friday, without identifying the source of their information.

Vilanova, 44, has been battling throat cancer for the past couple of years and spent two months having treatment in New York last season.

Vilanova, who underwent surgery on December 20 last year because of a cancer-related illness, only returned to the Los Cules bench in late March. He recently claimed that Guardiola, who is now the manager of Bayern Munich, ‘was not there for me’ during his cancer recovery.

Vilanova, who started his coaching career with Barcelona ‘B’ in 2007-08, was on a two-year contract and was expected to lead Barcelona against Real Madrid and their new coach Carlo Ancelotti in the upcoming season.

Barcelona recently announced the signing of Brazilian wonder kid Neymar to shore up their already potent forward line.
