Browne in US to improve military ties

 India's senior-most military officer Air Chief Marshal N A K Browne left for the US on Sunday to hold talks at the military level for boosting ongoing defence cooperation between the two countries.

The chief of Indian Air Force (IAF), who is also the Chairman, Chief of Staff Committee, departed on the eve of US Vice-President Joe Biden's maiden India visit.Biden is scheduled to reach New Delhi on Monday and hold talks with Indian officials on Tuesday in the capital before leaving for Mumbai, where he would meet India's top businessmen.

But defence and military cooperation will remain one of the thrust areas of discussions between India and the US during Biden's visit.

At the military level, Air Chief Marshal Browne is scheduled to hold talks with General Martin E Dempsey, Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff; General Mark Welsh, Chief of Staff, US Air Force; and General Herbert J “Hawk” Carlisle, Commander, Pacific Air Forces. They will not only discuss bilateral issues on the ongoing defence cooperation but also deliberate on the ways and means of strengthening the growing US-India security and defence relationship.

Browne would also accept the IAF's second C-17 Globemaster III on Monday.
