Symbiosis Institute of Business Management recently hosted ‘Induction 2013’, a formal introduction to its management course, which spanned a period of five days.

Each day had a specific programme, aimed at getting the new batch comfortable with the college and their study material. On the first day, the college hosted an event called Samaavesh — a platform for the newcomers to get a feel of the institute and simultaneously, understand the industry a little better. During the programme, a few alumni from the college took time off to interact with the new batch.

This year, these included Navdeep and Kulbhushan Chattoo, both of whom are doing well for themselves in their careers. They spoke to the students at length about what they could get from the college, and how best they could utilise these lessons in the real world.

“The interaction with the alumni helped us gain a lot of clarity as to how to approach our two years in the college. Seeing them gave us a lot of confidence,” says Neel Gala, one of the students.

The senior students also did their bit to ensure that the interaction was as helpful as possible. “The candid interaction with the alumni turned out to be a learning experience for both the students and the alumni. Samaavesh provided a launch pad from where dreams of a competent lot of young minds could take off,” says Jaiveer Duggal, who helped organise the programme.

On the second day of the induction, the MBA course for the batch of 2013-15 was formally inaugurated with a host of chief guests, such as Srikar Reddy, the CEO and MD of Sonata Software Ltd and Ashwini Mehra, chief general manager at State Bank of India. On the following three days, the college followed the tradition of bringing notable personalities from the industry to address the students, giving the newcomers a chance to learn and network. These included Mali Mahalingam, vice-president, HR at IBM India; Mukunthan N, vice-president, Goldman Sachs; Arun GK, human resources, TCS; Intikhab Wani, director talent, India Global Delivery Centers, IBM and Rajeev Kapoor, executive director, Dell International, among others.
They gave the students a brief glimpse of what they could expect from corporate life, along with acquainting them with the current market and new fields that are mushrooming everyday.

One topic that was touched upon at length was the current struggle of incorporating ethical practices in the framework of market-based ideologies.

All in all, it was an informative session for the junior batch, giving them a better idea of how best to utilise the chances they have.
