All Anganwadis in district to have own buildings shortly

If all goes well, the 324 Anganwadi centres in the district operating from alternative facilities will soon get their own buildings along with vitrified tiles.

Officials of Women and Child Welfare department have sent an estimation to the their head office in Bangalore, following instructions of V Sreenivas Prasad, District-In-Charge Minister in a recent meeting at Zilla Panchayat.

Out of 2,827 Anganwadis, as many as 324 lacked their own buildings and were sheltered at either community halls, temples or at rented buildings. As many as 225 centers have their own sites. The department has to procure land for setting up the remaining centers.

N R Vijay, Deputy Director, District Women and Child Welfare department told Deccan Herald that the estimated budget for a full fledged Anganwadi was Rs 10.91 lakh (revised estimate). The center would consist of one hall, portico, kitchen, a store and a toilet, while from water, electricity facilities and vitrified tiles would be provided.
RIDF to fund

He noted that the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) would fund the construction works. Donations from MPs and MLAs too would be collected. “Under RIDF, we have proposed 100 Anganwadi centers in the district,” he added.

He said that the department was finding out ways to set up the Anganwadi centers with comfortable facilities.

Even though 1,793 Anganwadi's function through own buildings, 104 centers operate from Panchayat buildings, 243 from community halls, 51 from temples, 138 from government schools and 168 fom rented buildings.

 “The government shelters are however assumed as own buildings,” Vijay added.
Hunsur has the highest demand of 107 centers. K R Nagar has the least demand. Just eight structures out of 300 don’t have own buildings.

Requirements

Mysore city has a requirement of 21 buildings; T Narasipur, 38 buildings; H D Kote, 20 buildings; Nanjangud, 50 buildings; Periyapatna, 40 buildings; and Mysore Rural, 64 buildings.

Vijay mentioned that 20 centers across the district have been identified to take up works on priority basis and works on them would begin soon.
