Metro's Helen achieves third breakthrough

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) on Thursday said tunnel boring machine 1 (TBM-1) Helen achieved its third breakthrough at Minsk Square (Cubbon Park underground station) at 5.15 pm after tunneling 457.5 m from Vidhana Soudha.

With this, sources said, the underground stretch between Majestic and Cubbon Park is almost ready and only about 700 m is pending between

Majestic and City Railway

Station. In a press release, the BMRCL said: “Helen started its operation (of tunneling) in the last week of June 2011 from Majestic East End and the first breakthrough was achieved on March 3, 2012 at Sir M Visvesvaraya underground Metro station (Central College) after tunneling 925 m.”

The second breakthrough was achieved at Vidhana Soudha underground station on December 12, 2012, after tunneling 725 m.
