Graft: GP secretary gets three years RI

 Judge of third additional district and special court (Lokayukta) Rajendra Badamkar on Friday held a gram panchayat secretary accused of graft guilty, while acquitting the co-accused junior engineer in the case. The secretary has been sentenced to three years rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 25,000.

The judge awarded one year rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10,000 for conviction under Anti-Corruption Act 1988 section seven and two years rigorous imprisonment and Rs 15,000 fine under section 13 (2).

In his complaint to Lokayukta police on August 04, 2009, Y G Chandrashekar a class three civil contractor of Yariyur, Yalandur taluk in Chamarajanagar district had alleged that Shivaswamy Secretary of Benkanahalli GP had demanded a bribe of Rs 51,500 to pass a bill of Rs 2.61 lakh.

Chandrashekar had also blamed local junior engineer and co-accused in the case N T Nagaraj of ZP sub-division, T Narsipura for seeking inducements to pass the bill.

Following this, a police team led by then Inspector D Jayaram trapped Shivaswamy when he was receiving the bribe amount. Chandrashekar had completed the works of a box type drain at Chandahalli village in Hemmige GP limits in T Narsipura taluk.

When Chandrashekar met Nagaraj for the bill, the latter had allegedly directed him to contact Shivaswamy. Shivaswamy had demanded 20 per cent of the bill amount as four party share (five per cent each). Accordingly, Chandrashekar bribed Shivaswamy. The charges against Shivaswamy were proved, while Nagaraj got the benefit of doubt and was acquitted, said Lokayukta SP S M Jagadish Prasad.

Jailed for rape

A man convicted of outraging the modesty of the female servant, has been sentenced to six months imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 15,000.

Judge of second additional district and sessions court Sridevi on Friday pronounced the order sentencing Dayanand alias Dayanand Kumar son of Kullana Siddappa, Hanumala village in Bannur police limits in the district. He had sexually exploited the servant of his house, an orphan on January 13, 2009. The woman who later conceived was forced to abort the foetus. He also reneged from keeping his marriage promise.

Following a complaint from the victim, the police had registered a case and submitted a charge sheet to the court, said a release from additional public prosecutor H E Chinnappa.
