Bus passes bleeding BMTC: Minister

Concessional City bus passes for students has left the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation with a burden of Rs 134.50 crore.

Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy told the Legislative Council on Monday that after four years of profit, the BMTC has registered a loss of Rs 147.95 core in 2012-13. he was replying to a question by Congress member K Govindaraj.

“The Corporation made a profit of Rs 55.18 crore in the year 2008-09, Rs 65.13 crore in 2009-10, Rs 50.35 crore in 2011-12 and Rs 21.42 crore in 2011-12. The salary revision of the employees cost the BMTC an additional Rs 99.6 crore. Increase in the prices of diesel and spare parts have cost Rs 48.60 crore and Rs 45 crore respectively. Despite the hike in bus fares, the Corporation is unable to plug the losses,” he said.

 Reddy said 500 new bus routes had been introduced and a fleet of 1,007 buses deployed, while 496 old buses were taken out of service. As many as 1,000 buses have been purchased at a cost of Rs 303.27 crore under the JnNURM programme and 10 Traffic and Transit Management Centres have been constructed at a cost of Rs 332.99 crore.

Responding to BJP member Monappa Bhandari, Reddy said 1,000 trips will be diverted to Peenya bus terminus due to ongoing construction of metro station at Kempegowda bus terminus.
