Stuck between results and admission

Last Updated 31 July 2013, 16:49 IST

Completing graduation is an important achievement in a student’s life. It becomes even more significant if you graduate from Delhi University, provided you have a proof of clearing the last semester. With the results and documents still pending for final year students of various courses like BA (Hons) Journalism and English, students are unsure of applying for further studies.

Going a little further than the usual delay in results, DU gave faulty results for the Journalism course this year. “Delhi University first declared incorrect results of Part III which had to be out of 2400 but were out of 2200. They withdrew it and even after more than 20 days, results are still undeclared,” says Shefali Saxena, a final year Journalism student awaiting her results. “Even if they declare it by next week, the marksheets will arrive only after 20-25 days, or may be after a month,” she adds worriedly.

The mismanagement is taking a toll on students opting for higher studies. Although some have taken the risk of confirming admission for Masters course, the concerned colleges or universities are demanding the missing documents. Even though their result has been declared, important papers proving the same have not been issued till date. A student of English (Hons) from Kirori Mal College, Saumya Painuli has taken admission in MA Communication Studies, University of Hyderabad.

“My result was declared on July 10 but the marksheet and provisional certificate haven’t been issued yet. Moreover, my college has refused to hand it over to anyone else on my behalf. So now I will have to miss my classes here and go back to Delhi especially to collect my missing documents, which are not due anytime soon.”

Monika Sharma, who has done her graduation in Journalism (Hons) from DU and is studying with Saumya, says, “All of us are now submitting an application demanding extension of the date to submit our documents in the University here. My fifth semester marksheets are also pending and will be given along with the final one. I desperately need my documents to prevent my admission from getting cancelled.”

Applying in Universities abroad is getting even tougher. As Shefali reveals, “I had applied to the University of Westminster for MA Multimedia Journalism where in they need my graduation results to provide me my CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) number, so that I can continue with my visa procedures. My admission and entire career is at stake due to this delay. Also, to get my education loan sanctioned, I need my graduation marksheet, which is stuck midway. My classes at Westminster will
begin in mid-September which means that I should have my visa sanctioned well in advance.”

Metrolife tried to find out from the authorities and contacted Rajiv Saini, Assistant Controller of Examination (results). Expectantly reluctant to answer, he said, “I am not authorised to speak on behalf of the University.”

When the University Information Centre was contacted, they informed Metrolife about a rather interesting substitute of applying for confidential results by paying Rs 500 at the North Campus Examination branch.

When authorities claim to provide individual results when demanded, uploading it collectively on the website should not really be a hassle. But for students who are
clueless about their graduation results, the rationality of this alternative remains
questionable.
