Degree in jewellery management

Last Updated 20 May 2009, 11:06 IST

To fulfil the demands and needs of customers these industries keep re-inventing themselves and come out with new, attractive and trendy designs.

As a result, a career in jewellery has become a very attractive option in India and abroad. The industry includes bench jewellers, jewellery designers, gemologists, marketing and overall managers.

The bench jewellers use common and specialised tools for designing, casting and manufacturing new pieces, setting stones and adjusting or repairing old ones.

Gemologists study the quality and value of gemstones. Jewellery designers design and make the piece. They prepare sketches by hand or use computer-aided design programmes. Like all other fields, marketing and management form an important part of this business.

Keeping in view the tremendous growth and scope of jewellery industries, and the need for people management, Manipal University, came up with a three-year Bachelor’s in Business Administration (BBA) degree in the year 2005. It is the first and only one of its kind in the whole country.

“The course contents are carefully chosen by both academicians and industrialists to fulfil the needs of the industry,” says Prof. Shanbhag, Director of Manipal Institute of jewellery Management (MIJM). Unlike other institutes which offer diploma courses or short-term courses, MIJM aims at covering all aspects related to the industry. They introduce related topics at various semesters, such as jewellery designing software, ornament designing, management skills, gemology, workshop practice, and international trade of jewellry among others. The sixth semester is focused on industrial projects to give more practical exposure to students.

“By undergoing the entire six semesters our students are capable of running independently,” explains Prof Shanbhag. Most of the students of previous year batch have been selected by many reputed companies, before completion of their projects.

Eligibility

The minimum qualification required is 10+2. Three-year diploma holders can directly get entry into the third semester.

BBA holders of this course may enroll into an MBA course at any university in country or abroad.

The institute is well equipped with computer laboratories, workshops and other modern facilities needed for quality education. The faculty is well-qualified having strong academic and industrial background. Some specialised courses are taught by guest faculties to give more exposure in the related fields.

MSc in Chemistry

Next to IITs, NITs (National Institute of Technology) are the most prominent technical educational institutions in our country. Among the 22 NIT’s in India, NITK Surathkal (formerly known as Karnataka Regional Engineering College-Surathkal) is well known for its excellence in technical education.

In most of the technical institutes, basic science (Physics, Chemistry & Maths) is considered as supporting departments. The same is not true at NITK. Under the able guidance of Prof. Sandeep Sancheti, Director-NITK Surathkal, the Chemistry Department has started offering MSc degree in chemistry.

Candidates with chemistry as a subject in their BSc degree are eligible to apply.

However, it is mandatory to qualify the entrance exam conducted by the department. Only 27 seats are available. Last date for applications to reach NITK is 26 May.
