In an incident reflective of insensitivity, a rape victim had to spend an entire night at the gate of the hospital and made to wait for over 36 hours by the hospital administration simply to get herself medically examined.

The victim, who was allegedly raped by her own father and brother for over nine years and was in a state of shock, was not even given a bed or a sheet.

She had to lie down on the ground with a woman constable waiting for her medical examination at the government women’s hospital here.

Humiliated

The victim, according to witnesses, had kept her face covered, apparently feeling humiliated at her exposure.

She had approached Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav at his ‘janata darshan’ (meet the people programme) on Wednesday, after which police arrested her father and brother. Her mother, who too had supported her exploitation, was also arrested.

After registering the case against the three accused, police sent the victim to the hospital for medical examination. A woman constable also accompanied her.

But the victim was told to wait as doctors were busy.

She kept waiting outside the gate of the hospital till late night, but her medical examination could not be done. She did not return home as she had no idea when she could be called for the medical test.

Her medical examination was conducted on Thursday noon finally, according to reports.

Doctors defiant

Doctors at the hospital remained defiant. “The hospital is very crowded these days. We do not have enough beds or sheets, so we cannot help it,” said a senior doctor.

Earlier too, a rape victim was made to lie on the corridor of a government hospital for several hours before her medical examination was conducted.
