UP panchayat settles rape case for Rs 50K

Tells victim's family not to go to police

A panchayat in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut district, about 400 kilometers from here, allegedly forced a minor gang rape victim to settle the matter for mere Rs 50 thousand.

The panchayat members also got the alleged culprits to pay the money to the victim’s family and asked them to forget about it and not to report the matter to the police, according to the reports.
Reports said that a 15-year-old girl, who worked as a maid servant, was allegedly gang raped by three youths on Friday evening. The culprits escaped after committing the crime.

The minor victim narrated the matter to her parents but before they could approach the police, the family members of the culprits began to exert pressure on them to settle the matter outside the court and offered to pay them some compensation, reports said.

Forced to take money

A panchayat was convened on Saturday which, after hours of deliberations, asked the victim’s family to accept Rs 50 thousand as compensation and not to go to the police. They were also forced to take the money.

The police said that they had no information about the panchayat but admitted that no report had so far been lodged in this connection.

Earlier also panchayats in UP had let off rape accused after imposing fines on the culprits.
A few months back, a panchayat in Uttar Pradesh’s Amroha district had let off a man who had allegedly raped his own niece, after imposing a fine on him and asked the victim’s family not to approach the police for registration of a case.

Bizarre decisions

Panchayats in the state are known for their bizarre decisions to settle cases of  sexual exploitation.
Barely a few days ago, a panchayat had imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on a 45-year old man, who had allegedly fathered a child through an illegitimate relationship with a 17-year-old girl and settled the matter.
