Committee to monitor preparations

The Sports Ministry on Wednesday formed a steering committee to monitor and coordinate the preparations related to major international sports events till the 2020 Olympic Games.

The committee would be chaired by secretary (sports), the ministry said in a statement.
The other members of the committee would be director-general of the Sports Authority of India, joint-secretary (sports), joint secretary (development), a government-appointed observer from the concerned discipline, a member of the national sports federation, a representative of the Indian Olympic Association, the chief coach of the concerned discipline, executive director (teams, SAI) and a co-opted member, if required.

The major functions of the committee would be to decide core probable, reviewing performance of the probables every three months, fast tracking decisions including on arrangement of additional funds and looking into the cases which cannot be solved by SAI, DG.

The Sports Minister last month had expressed his dissatisfaction over India’s preparations for next year’s Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. India currently is suspended by International Olympic Committee (IOC) over violation of Olympic charter. The suspended Indian Olympic Association (IOA) needs to amend its constitution by October 31 and conduct fresh elections by December 15 to regain its entry into Olympic fold.
