Rain wreaks havoc in Turuvekere

Property and crops worth lakhs of rupees were destroyed in the heavy rainfall that lashed the taluk on Tuesday night. The property loss alone is estimated to be more than Rs five lakh. The crop loss is yet to be ascertained.

In Muniyuru, five houses collapsed due to the downpour. The residents of the village are now living in fear due to the serial collapse of houses. The government should give compensation to those whose houses have collapsed, they added.

The taluk on Tuesday night received as much as 51.2 mm rainfall with Dandinashivara and Sampige villages topping the list.

The taluk usually receives 143 mm rainfall for the month of September. However, just 11 days into the month, the taluk has already received 133 mm of rainfall.

The rainfall has adversely affected the farmers as many crops have been destroyed. Ragi, which has been sown in 19,000 hectares, is one of the worst affected. Tuesday’s downpour has inundated several hectares.
