Last Updated 16 September 2013, 20:12 IST

A housemaid was found dead at the residence of her friend, also a housemaid, in Chamundi Layout in Vidyaranyapura on Monday evening. The deceased has been identified as Indira, in her late 30s. She was found lying dead at the house of Lakshmi, her friend.

Lakshmi lives in a rented one-room tenement on the terrace of a three-storey building. On Monday evening, when her son came home after school with a friend, they found a woman lying in a pool of blood. The boy’s friend turned out to be the son of a police constable at the Vidyaranyapura police station. He alerted his father. When police arrived at the spot, Lakshmi told them that Indira barged into the house at around 1 pm with head injuries and collapsed to death. Lakshmi said that she was so shocked by the turn of events that she could not do anything till her son came home.

However, police said that if Lakshmi’s version were to believed, there should have been blood stains on the staircase leading up to the terrace, which are strangely absent. Police have registered a murder case and have detained Lakshmi for questioning.

Sandeep Patil, DCP (North), said that they were presently treating Lakshmi as a suspect in the case. The body has been shifted to M S Ramaiah Hospital where autopsy would be performed on Tuesday. The autopsy report is expected to shed light on the cause of death, he said.

ATM theft bid

An inebriated man attempted to loot cash from an unguarded ATM on Whitefield Main Road on Sunday night.  The incident came to light on Monday morning when two constables attached to Mahadevapura station found the machine broken. However, no cash was stolen from the ATM. A senior police official said the CCTV footage at the kiosk showed a drunk youth walking into counter and opening the top cap of the machine.
