The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare will organise a one-day regional consultation on HIV-AIDS in Bangalore to bring together elected representatives and officials from seven south Indian states for taking pro active role in combating the scourge.

The event is tentatively scheduled for October-November. Government officials and political leaders from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Pudduchery, Kerala and Goa will take part in the consultation.

The workshop is being held in coordination with Forum of Parliamentarians on HIV/ AIDS (FPA). Two years ago, in July 2011, the Forum had organised a national consultation for parliamentarians, legislators, mayors and Zilla Parishat presidents in New Delhi. This regional workshop will act as a continuum to the Delhi event and will attempt to address the issues and concerns raised during the previous consultation. Members of Parliament, chief ministers, Speakers, leaders of Opposition, state Health ministers, representatives of UNAIDS and several non-government organisations will take part in the programme.

Announcing the consultation, Health minister U T Khader added that discussions are on to provide health insurance to APL card holders as well.
