Rajasthan advises CBI probe into rape case

Last Updated 21 September 2013, 20:42 IST

The state government on Saturday recommended a CBI investigation into the rape charges against former minister Babulal Nagar. The CID crime branch has been investigating the case.

The minister has already put in his papers after the women registered a case against the minister through a court. Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot accepted his resignation on Friday.
According to government sources, the letter recommending a CBI probe against the minister has been sent to the CBI office on Saturday afternoon.

Meanwhile the woman’s statement was recorded in the court of metropolitan magistrate on Saturday.

The opposition BJP and many women’s organisations have been demanding a probe by the CBI, expressing concern about the state police’s possible partiality over the investigation. The decision would give some reprieve to the beleaguered minister as the CBI was expected to arrest him at any time for questioning. It will take a few days for the CBI to get its act together.

A 27 year old married woman had alleged that Babulal Nagar, the then minister for dairy, khadi and village industries, asked her to visit him at his residence at Civil Lines residence on September 11 in the evening.

She said she reached his house about 5 pm after she received a call from the minister. On her arrival, the minister offered her a drink and assured suitable jobs for her as well as her family members. She in her complaint said the minister then went inside his room and asked her to come to the room. The woman followed him to the room.

Allegedly, Babulal then sexually assaulted her. She said the minister warned her against revealing this to anyone and threatened to kill her if she makes the incident public.
