'Mangala stadium to be developed'

Minister for Youth Services, Sports and Fisheries Abhayachandra Jain has said that there was a need to promote adventure sports in Thannirbavi beach.

The Minister had inspected beach area for the possibility of starting adventure sports there.

Chairing a review meeting, he said that there is ample opportunities to promote adventure sports in the district. Mangala stadium will be developed. There are shortage of students in sports hostel. Hence, the officials should concentrate on improving the facilities.

In a separate meeting, he directed the fisheries department officials to provide all the facilities to the needy fishermen. The work on ports development should commence immediately.

The Central water Power Research Station (CWPRS) and Central Institute of Coastal Experience For Fisheries (CIECF) has already given nod for the construction of a jetty at Kulai. He directed the officials to furnish the details on the project within a month.

The work on fisheries port is in progress.

The work on extension of wharf in Mangalore is in progress, said Fisheries department deputy director M D Prasad.

The official said that under Mastyashraya scheme, financial assistance of Rs 137.08 lakh has been given for 2,837 fishermen for constructing houses. The target was 1180 houses during 2012-13. This includes 220 in Dakshina Kannada and 960 in Udupi district.

The official said that for the development of Hejamady port, samples of soil has been sent to test in the laboratory. The work can be started after getting the report. A sum of Rs 390 lakh as been earmarked for the development of fisheries road.
