<p>Two Delhi Police officers were allegedly fired at when they were chasing a ‘wanted interstate gangster’ in east Delhi’s Shakarpur on Wednesday, but escaped unhurt due to their bulletproof jackets.<br /><br /></p>.<p>According to Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell), Mohammad Fahim opened fire at Sub-Inspector Azad Bhushan and Head Constable Yashpal Bhati.<br /><br />“Fahim was asked to surrender, but he tried to flee and opened fire. We also fired in self-defence and apprehended Fahim after a brief chase,” Yadav added.<br /><br />More than a dozen cases of murder, robbery and snatching in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh have been solved with the arrest. “Fahim was also carrying a reward on his arrest in a murder case registered with Galsahid police station in Uttar Pradesh,” Yadav said. <br />Accomplices held<br /><br />Fahim’s accomplices Kadir Ali, 19, and Akshay Sarin, 21, were apprehended on Monday near Guru Nanak Eye Centre in central Delhi.<br /><br />Police have recovered three pistols and 12 cartridges from them.<br /><br />On sustained interrogation, Kadir and Akshay told police on Monday that they were members of Fahim Pona gang and were involved in a spate of robbery and snatching in Delhi and UP.<br /><br />As per inputs provided by them, efforts were made to trace Fahim.<br /><br />Specific information was received on Wednesday that Fahim would be coming to Ramesh Park in east Delhi’s Shakarpur.<br /><br />On this, a team of special cell laid a trap. Around 8.30 pm, Fahim was spotted and was asked to surrender, but he tried to flee and opened fire.<br /><br />“We also fired in self-defence and apprehended Fahim after a brief chase,” Yadav added.<br />A case of attempt to murder under Indian Penal Code and Arms Act has been registered with Special Cell police station.<br /><br />In 1999, Fahim and his three accomplices had tried to flee after robbing Rs 5 lakh in cash in south-east Delhi’s Sukhdev Vihar. Police apprehended Fahim after a chase and brief exchange of fire.<br /><br />“Fahim had sustained a gunshot wound in his abdomen. He was arrested in that case and remained in Tihar Jail till 2005,” Yadav said.<br /><br />After being released from the jail, Fahim continued his criminal activities.</p>
