Two Delhi Police officers were allegedly fired at when they were chasing a ‘wanted interstate gangster’ in east Delhi’s Shakarpur on Wednesday, but escaped unhurt due to their bulletproof jackets.

According to Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell), Mohammad Fahim opened fire at Sub-Inspector Azad Bhushan and Head Constable Yashpal Bhati.

“Fahim was asked to surrender, but he tried to flee and opened fire. We also fired in self-defence and apprehended Fahim after a brief chase,” Yadav added.

More than a dozen cases of murder, robbery and snatching in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh have been solved with the arrest. “Fahim was also carrying a reward on his arrest in a murder case registered with Galsahid police station in Uttar Pradesh,” Yadav said.
Accomplices held

Fahim’s accomplices Kadir Ali, 19, and Akshay Sarin, 21, were apprehended on Monday near Guru Nanak Eye Centre in central Delhi.

Police have recovered three pistols and 12 cartridges from them.

On sustained interrogation, Kadir and Akshay told police on Monday that they were members of Fahim Pona gang and were involved in a spate of robbery and snatching in Delhi and UP.

As per inputs provided by them, efforts were made to trace Fahim.

Specific information was received on Wednesday that Fahim would be coming to Ramesh Park in east Delhi’s Shakarpur.

On this, a team of special cell laid a trap. Around 8.30 pm, Fahim was spotted and was asked to surrender, but he tried to flee and opened fire.

“We also fired in self-defence and apprehended Fahim after a brief chase,” Yadav added.
A case of attempt to murder under Indian Penal Code and Arms Act has been registered with Special Cell police station.

In 1999, Fahim and his three accomplices had tried to flee after robbing Rs 5 lakh in cash in south-east Delhi’s Sukhdev Vihar. Police apprehended Fahim after a chase and brief exchange of fire.

“Fahim had sustained a gunshot wound in his abdomen. He was arrested in that case and remained in Tihar Jail till 2005,” Yadav said.

After being released from the jail, Fahim continued his criminal activities.
