Last Updated 26 October 2013, 20:56 IST

Led by Delhi Chief Electoral Officer Vijay Dev, thousands of election department and security personnel are tirelessly working for holding the December 4 Assembly elections, and they promise to make it a special experience. Dev talks to Rahul Chhabra and Vishal Kant about the poll preparations.

What are you doing to increase voter participation?

We are going all out to achieve a high voter turnout as Delhi being the capital is looked up to by many other states to set high standards. Apart from promotional campaign led by youth icons to encourage voter participation, we have also addressed the problem of urban voters’ apathy.

What did you do to prevent urban voters from staying away from polling booths?

To tackle the issue of low voter turnout in some pockets, we closely studied factors related to the areas where polling booths with past low turnout are located. We identified the sections of society who were not voting, and also examined the income brackets of the non-voters. After this we devised a focussed strategy to encourage all of them to exercise their franchise.

How exactly does ‘none of the above’ option button works on electronic voting machines?

Special machines will be available for exercising the NOTA option. Voters will be able to exercise the option without revealing their identity.

What are the special features of these elections?

Zero tolerance to violations is a major highlight of our performance. In these elections we have achieved 100 per cent voter election card coverage, enrolled 1.16 crore electorate and identified one lakh election duty officers and 50,000 security personnel.
