According to an amendment in 1988, a licence to ride an ungeared 50 cc two-wheeler could be issued to anyone who is 16 years of age or above. The department will move this proposal to the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The Transport Department believes that many DL holders, who obtained licences after attaining the age of 16 ride un-geared on geared two-wheelers of 100 cc and above in violation of the MV Act.

“It has been found that when insurance is claimed after an accident, the driver produces a license that makes him/her eligible to drive only an un-geared bike, where as they would be driving a geared or un-geared vehicle of a higher capacity engine. When faced with such situations, the insurance company can deny payment,” said Bhaskar Rao, Transport and Road Safety Commissioner.
