Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has planned to instal surveillance cameras in eight Traffic Transit and Management Centres (TTMC).
The corporation has already installed cameras in Majestic and Shivajinagar bus stations.

Following a survey at TTMCs in Shanthinagar, Vijayanagar, Jayanagar, Koramangala, ITPL, Yeshwantpur, Domlur and Banashankari, BMTC officials have identified certain areas within TTMC to fix cameras to monitor the entire area.

BMTC Chief Security & Vigilance Officer Ramachandraiah said surveillance cameras will be set up at the TTMCs within a month. These will also help monitor the entry and exit of buses and the conduct of drivers and conductors.

“We have not yet finalised the number of cameras to be fixed. This will depend on the dimension of each TTMC. The total estimated cost for the installation process is Rs 1.67 crore, he added.

A BMTC official at the Shanthinagar bus station said there were lot of people hanging out at the bus station for no reason. Recently, a few college girls complained of being teased by a group of boys. But it is difficult to identify the culprits. The cameras will help to identify unwanted elements at the bus stations. A letter was written to BMTC regarding installation of CCTV cameras at TTMCs by the police department and it was later followed up by Wilson Garden Police Station, Wilson Garden Police Station sub-inspector said. "The letter was written a month ago insisting BMTC to instal cameras so that it would help round up people who cause nuisance in public places or engage in illegal activities.”

A monitoring section will be set up at every TTMC and also at the Shantinagar bus station. People will be specially appointed to operate the cameras and monitor the videos which will be recorded.

Additional Commissioner of Police Kamal Pant said cameras are a must in places were there is heavy movement of people. “We need to use more technology like cameras and other gadgets to keep a check on illegal activities. People should also be made aware of the cameras so that they hesitate before indulging in any kind of illegal activities.”
