5-member gang held

An armed gang of five persons, which arrived in a flower-bedecked car posing as a bridegroom party, was caught red-handed when it was about to carry out robbery at a jewellery showroom in Jayanagar on Thursday, the police said.
The gang leader Sajesh, a Mechanical engineer from Kannur in Kerala, Touheed (24) from Maharashtra, Gopi (26) of J C Nagar, Sardar Pasha (22) and Imran (20) of Mysore were arrested when they approached Tanishq Jewellers in Jayanagar 11th Main around 5:30 pm.

As per the Commissioner’s instruction on storing the data of all the criminals, the Sampigehalli police had collected cellpone number of one of the accused from a person arrested in connection with dacoity at Bagalur. They had kept a tab on the gang’s movement.

Through the interception of the calls, the police had come to know about the gang’s plot to rob the jewellery shop. It had planned the robbery at a dhaba on Nagawara Ring Road.

"We started chasing them. They first went to Russel Market in Shivajinagar around 3:30 pm and decorated their car. We were surprised. When they proceeded towards Jayanagar, we informed the Jayanagar police. They joined us and we planned to carry out a surprise raid but gave it up as the gang was armed. The accused waited outside for sometime and kept a vigil on the movement of the customers and staff of the showroom. The moment they moved forward to execute their plan, we nabbed them," Sampigehalli Inspector Ratnakar Shetty told Deccan Herald.

The inspector said, Sajesh was the leader of the gang. He had worked with some firms in Chennai and Bangalore. He was pursuing M. Tech through correspondence course. After losing his job in 2008, he had obtained loan to start his own computer hardware and networking business, but went bankrupt. Later, he took to robbery and formed a gang by roping in jobless youths from Coles Park.

The gang planned to wear hand gloves, monkey caps and helmets to avoid recognition. They were armed with air pistols. They also possessed sprays to make the people at the showroom unconscious.
