Created to mark the country's National Flag Day, the 1,500-meter long standard was unfurled during festivities in the Tajik capital, Dushanbe.
Dushanbe town hall spokesman Shavkat Saidov said today that Tajikistan has submitted its application to the Guinness committee in the hope of knocking Russia off the top spot.
A Russian flag about 1,260-meter long was presented in St. Petersburg in August to mark the country's own national flag day. Another ex-Soviet Central Asian nation, Turkmenistan, holds the Guinness record for the world's tallest flagpole, which measures 133 metres.
