A retired judge of the Chattisgarh High Court Deshmukh, who is replacing S Balasubramaniam as the CLB chairman, was to take charge on December 1 only.

“He was supposed to join by the first of December but we have requested him to take over day after tomorrow given the situation now. I am given to understand that he will fly in tomorrow and take over the day after,” said corporate affairs minister Salman Khurshid.

The CBI late Monday night arrested R Vasudevan form his official residence for allegedly seeking a bribe of Rs 7 lakh for giving a favourable order on a petition involving a leading vernacular daily. Following the arrest, the Delhi bench of the CLB remains vacant. Already short staffed, the CLB at present has just two members — in the Chennai bench. Ideally, the CLB should be a nine-member bench — eight members and the chairman.
