Expressing lack of confidence in the West Bengal Police, the family of the 16-year-old gang-rape and murder victim has asked for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe the case.

The girl’s father, who filed a petition in the Calcutta High Court on Monday, said he had no faith or confidence in the state police and wanted a CBI investigation into his daughter’s gang-rape and death. He said the state police have been busier trying to suppress the case and safeguard the rapists, instead of investigating the matter. The victim, who was allegedly gang-raped on two occasions, succumbed to burns on December 31 after she was set ablaze by the perpetrators.

“My daughter had to die because the police failed to provide adequate security to her,” said the bereaved father, who drives a taxi for a living. He also asked the court to order the state government to pay him suitable compensation for his daughter’s death, which he believed was caused due to medical negligence and poor security by the police.

The girl was allegedly gang-raped by six people on October 25 and again the next day, when she was returning from the police station after filing a complaint. She was a 8-class student and had shifted in with her mother at Madhyamgram near Kolkata from Patna in July.
