The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is likely to emerge as the largest party with around 210 seats in the 2014 general election, ABP News-Nielsen has predicted through a countrywide opinion poll.

The poll predicts that the Congress is likely to rout with the lowest-ever figure of 81 seats in the 543-seat House, while the newly formed Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) may get around 11 seats. It also predicted that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) would form the government at the Centre with 226 seats overall, while Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi is likely to become the next prime minister.

The survey reveals that the BJP prime ministerial candidate seems to be the people’s choice for the position of prime minister, with 53 per cent of respondents voting for him. Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, on the other hand, has the vote of 15 per cent respondents. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal gets a nod from a mere 5 per cent of respondents.

A majority (47 per cent) of respondents do not think that the allegations levelled against Modi regarding illegal surveillance of a young woman are true, while 36 per cent feel that the UPA government’s decision to probe the snoop gate is not right. The opinion poll claimed there is an anti-incumbent mood with a majority (61 per cent) saying that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government should not get another chance. As per the opinion poll conducted across the nation, 43 per cent of respondents have rated the UPA government performance as “poor” or “very poor” with a mean score of 2.69, a release said.

At an overall level, half (52 per cent) of the respondents feel that the previous NDA government was better than the present UPA government at the Centre. As per the national opinion poll, 38% respondents have rated Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s performance with a mean score of 2.85. If elections were held now, at an overall level, 52 per cent of respondents feel that BJP-led NDA will form the government at the Centre in 2014, the survey says.
