Bus - auto collision kills 4 of family

In a ghastly accident, four members of a family were killed on the spot when a KSRTC bus collided head-on against an autorickshaw in which they were travelling, at Panemangalur bridge on NH 75, on Monday late night. Three children survived with serious injuries in the accident. 

According to the police, the deceased are Bhaskar Poojary (45), his wife Prema (35), brother Jagadish Poojary (38) and his wife Supritha (30). All were the residents of Mulibailu, in Barimaru village of Bantwal taluk. The injured are children of Bhaskar couple Abhijna (7) and Rithijna (4) and son of  Jagadish couple Nishan (4). Of the injured, Abhijna is recovering and right leg of Nishan has been amputed. 

They were returning home after attending a marriage function, at Kodange. It was said that Bhaskar Poojary had purchased autorickshaw last month and he himself was driving. 

The accident occurred when he tried to overtake a lorry and the bus coming from opposite direction rammed into the auto. The autorickshaw has been damaged completely. The intensity of the crash was such that the auto was reduced into a bundle of metals. Through mobilephone, the police could inform their younger brother Jayanth, who was travelling at Kakyapadavu. 

As soon as the news began to spread, youth from Goodinabali, Aladka, Akkarangadi, Melkar, Nandavara rushed to the spot, for rescue operation. 

The accident resulted in traffic block for an hour. Without streetlights on the bridge, the police and public had to struggle to get the bodies out of the autorickshaw.

Bhaskar Poojary and Jagadish Poojary were working as tanker drivers in the past.
 However, recently, the duo had opened a general stores at Barimaru and Ariyakodi. 

Bhaskar Poojary’s eldest daughter Prajna had not attended the marriage function and was taking care of her ailing grand parents. 

Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim and Tahsildar B S Malleswamy visited the hospital. Former union minister Janardhan Poojary who visited the family members promised to provide Rs 5.30 lakh by raising funds from Kudroli temple and Congress leaders. 

In the meantime, District-in-Charge Minister Ramanath Rai has directed the district administration to make arrangement for the release of compensation. 

The entire village mourned the death of four persons. Lakshman Poojary and his wife Shashikala, parents of the deceased were inconsolable, for having lost their sons and daughters-in-law. The bus driver and conductor who had fled the spot have been arrested by the police.
