From now on, every cop in the district will be in a position to avail monthly provisions, except groceries at a subsidised rate. The much awaited Police Canteen facility was inaugurated in eights places in the State including two at Mysore district, here on Tuesday.

The canteen has stocked up all kinds of household needs like detergents, soaps, perfumes, beauty creams, electronics and utensils. It also has eatables like biscuits, snacks, and energy drinks. Canteens were opened for district and city police at different places. It was inaugurated at a time in eight places by the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah during the annual police officers meet held at Bangalore.

DCP (Law and Order) A N Rajanna speaking on the occasion said that the canteen will provide articles at 20 to 30 percent discount rates to police personnels. All ranking officials, from police constables to higher cadre officers have been given a smart card bearing the photographs of the official and the spouse. He said that husbands and wives of police officials can use of the facility when their spouses are on duty.

In order to avoid chaos and misuse of the canteen facility, the purchasing amount has been limited to a fixed amount. The police constable to head constable cadre can shop up to Rs 3,000 per month; till the ACP cadre it is Rs 5,000; and unlimited for DCPs, SPs and Police Commissioners. Details of every month shopping is stored in electronic smart card.

There are also plans to add groceries and liquor at the canteen.

Rajanna added that the city unit at the Mounted Police premises was a temporary arrangement and that it would be shifted to a bigger space. The working hours are from 9 am to 2 pm, “As per demand, the timings will be extended,” he said. The district unit has been set up at Jyothinagar.

The new canteen facility aims to benefit as many as 3,000 cops in Mysore, both city and district.
