The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike’s plans to introduce Geographical Information System (GIS)-based road history has hit a roadblock.

It is learnt that senior Palike officials are not keen on implementing the project due to “pressure” being exerted on them.

According to Palike officers, the project was ready after three years of hardwork and data fed into it. All that was required is link the programme with the Internet and make it accessible to all.

Ready for launch

Claiming that the project was ready for launch, Kadu Malleswara ward Corporator Manjunath Raju, who was closely associated with it, observed that “for some unknown reasons, the BBMP has been backtracking. Linking the project with the Internet requires ten days of work, which nobody is keen to take up.”

Officers associated with the project said politicians, officers and contractors, were not keen on the project because it would stop their additional source of income through corrupt means. Manjunath Raju said he would raise this matter in the BBMP Council and demand that the mayor and commissioner implement it at the earliest to check misuse of funds.

Ambitious project

The project was aimed at making online information about the nature of work being carried out by the BBMP, check duplication of work, which has plagued the civic agency.

The success of the project lies in awarding works based on road history and periodical updation of the programme with relevant data fed into the system.

With the BBMP beset by a series of scams ranging from works on roads to toilets to pavements, to tree-felling, corporators and officers planned to introduce GIS-based road history to ensure tranparency and accountability and check duplication of works.

The scheme intends to give each road a distinct identity number, which cannot match with another road. The identity number comprises ward number, area code and road number.

The road history will have details of the length and width of the road, total length of the pavement, number of trees and manholes in that stretch.
