Compensation Act amended to help workers

Speaking to the media on Saturday, Union Labour and Employment Minister Mallikharjun Kharge said that the amendments to the Act have been passed early this week in the ongoing winter session of parliament. The amended Act will be beneficial to lakhs of workers employed in both organised and unorganised sectors enabling them to get compensation liberally and expeditiously, he said.

The funeral expenses in case of death of an employee due to accidents has been raised from Rs 2,500 to Rs 5,000 and disability compensation has been increased from Rs 90,000 to Rs 1.40 lakh and death compensation from Rs 80,000 to Rs 1.20 lakh. Kharge said that some important amendments will be also be brought to the Industrial Disputes Act for the benefit of workers.

Government orders have been issued for the creation of Employees’ Provident Fund Regional Office and Employees’ State Insurance Corporation’s Sub-Regional Office in Gulbarga.  The PF regional office will have jurisdiction over the entire North Karnataka
