Spreading their wings across

When Anshul Singhal and his wife Sunaina came to Bangalore to work in the IT industry, they found it tough to find good, affordable food.

Entrepreneurs in their own right, they decided to quit their jobs and join the ‘foodwagon’, which led them to open their own eatery called ‘Spreads & More’ in June 2013.

“In Bangalore, only low-end or high-end food was available and we wanted to fill that gap. That’s why we offer high quality food at affordable rates that everybody can enjoy,” explains Anshul.

The USP of the place lies in its authentic North Indian flavours, which range from its chaats to parathas to masala chai. “The most popular items are our cheelas, sprouts chaat, chole kulcha, badam ka kheer, gulab jamun and thandai. We keep adding new items to the menu to maintain our promise of innovation and also customise dishes as per the personal preferences of our customers,” shares Sunaina.

Anshul adds, “There are beverages like tulsi tea, chocolate lassi, milkshakes and thandai that are fast moving but my personal recommendation is the gulab jamun. No one can eat just one!”

Another item worth trying is the thaali, which comes in four options depending on how hungry one is. “Lunch is when we really have a rush but dinner is usually manageable. During the evenings, more people come here for things like an aloo tikki chaat or vada pav whereas dinner is usually thalis or heavy snacks like pav bhaji. We see a lot of college students, office crowd and families. In fact, many of our regulars come back with their families on weekends,” smiles Anshul, adding that they’ve been told that their veg pulao is better than biryani.

Other than the fact that one can get freshly prepared food quickly at a fair price, another reason to go to the restaurant is just to see the eager couple at work. It’s not a wonder that they are already thinking of opening a new outlet in HSR Layout in the near future. “We never thought that this restaurant would be such a big success.

Our growth has been based on word of mouth and recommendations and some people have really started making this a home where they are guaranteed something close to ghar ka khana. It’s a very comforting feeling,” wraps up Sunaina.
