Winter’s Tale
English (A) ¬¬¬
Cast: Colin Farrell, Jennifer Connelly, Russell Crowe, William Hurt, Eva Marie Saint
Director: Akiva Goldsman

Magical, whimsical and a visual delight, ‘Winter’s Tale’ will transport you into a surreal world of eternal love. Probably an ideal film to watch on a Valentine’s Day weekend but sure its not for the coldhearted, who despise fairy-tale romances of any kind.

Academy award winning screenwriter, Akiva Goldsman - who we know from movies like ‘A Beautiful Mind,’ ‘Batman & Robin’ and ‘The Da Vinci Code,’ has made his directorial debut with this film. Though the script has certain loose ends, it is a sincere attempt with an excellent cast.

Set in 1916 New York, orphaned thief Peter Lake, (Colin Farrell) breaks into Beverly Penn’s (Jessica Brown Findlay) home with a gun in hand, but she chooses to see the inner goodness in him.

A consumptive Beverly has been getting physically weak and knows she has less time, while, Peter, a petty criminal on the streets of New York has never had a chance with any kind of affection or love since his childhood, neither of two have much to lose or fear the same, in the process they end up finding themselves in each other, or if you may call it so, fall in love.

Peter is torn between spending time with Beverly and escaping from his boss Pearly Soames (Russell Crowe) who is on a mission to harm him. Tragedy strikes and then the time-travelling begins as Peter walks into present day New York searching for the reminisces of his lost love.

It is a story of hope, and the endless possibilities of true love, all this set within the framework of magical realism.
