The jalebi-maker of Bangla Sweet House in Gole Market, who was shot in the back of his head by a private security guard on Tuesday night, succumbed on Wednesday.

Neeraj Kumar, 26, had allegedly fired at Satender Singh after he refused to give him priority over others who were in a queue.

Singh was first rushed to Lady Hardinge Hospital, but was soon referred to Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital where he died around 6 am.

Sources have told Deccan Herald that the accused has claimed that he shot Singh as during the argument, the victim called him a ‘Bihari’ which he took as a “racist comment”.

“But before that the duo had engaged in a heated verbal exchange during which the driver of the CMS agency van even called him away and advised him not to fight,” the source revealed. Neeraj, however, allegedly returned to continue the fight. “When Neeraj pulled out the gun, Singh dared him to shoot. Neeraj then pulled the trigger,” the source added.

The driver of the van, who was also apprehended after the incident to see if he was involved in any way, is not going to be charged. Neeraj was sent to judicial custody on Wednesday. He is to be charged with murder after the victim failed to survive the attack.

Police, meanwhile, are verifying if the license for the pistol is genuine. The pistol was recovered from him soon after the incident. “Neeraj is a resident of Aurangabad in Bihar, but his license has been issued from Lucknow.

The license is under suspicion and we are trying to verify its authenticity,” said S B S Tyagi, Deputy Commissioner of Police, New Delhi. It will also be investigated how such a person managed to get an arm’s license at such a young age.

A policeman is likely to be sent to Lucknow soon to verify his license. A post-mortem was conducted and the body was handed over to his family who took him away to his village at Bhind in Madhya Pradesh.

Police said he had been working as a jalebi-maker with the sweet shop for the last 15 years.
