A family name in Kolkata, Pabrai’s, an ice cream parlour, opened a few months ago on Wood Street.

One can try out a variety of oddly interesting flavours – from the likes of paan and nalen gur to South Indian coffee and green tea! From the outside, the place looks like any other ice cream parlour. But the 100 per cent natural and researched flavours offered here are what makes it stand out. Anuvrat Pabrai is the man behind the creation of ice creams while his sons Kunal and Nishant run the business. “My father has been in the ice cream line for 28 years. Our USP is that we sell 100 per cent natural ice creams — they are made without any artificial additives, colours, preservatives, purees or canned products. That is why a fruit that isn’t in season won’t be found here. Months of research and trial and error go into the creation before a customer tries it. Even with a single fruit, there are hundreds of varieties and we have to figure out which one works best as an ice cream,” says Kunal Pabrai, the owner.

He adds that the conventional ice cream making process of pasteurisation, homogenisation and freezing is followed.  The sound of passion is clear in his voice as he continues. “A person who has our ice cream once is a customer for life. We have taken the trouble of creating an experience for the customer. That’s why our vanilla ice cream is made from vanilla pods and chocolate ice cream from natural cocoa, which is rare to find,” elaborates Kunal.

While the conventional flavours like vanilla, strawberry and chocolate have their share of fans, it’s the unlikely combinations that do best, informs Harsha Gupta, a franchisee.

Some of the experimental flavours include black sesame, chandan, orange and basil, ginger honey, apple pie, kesari rab malai, tender coconut, masala chai and lemon grass among others. A limited variety of sundaes is also available.

“People from as far as Banashankari come for specific flavours, especially over the weekend. We had actually opened at the same location two years ago, closed down due to some issues and reopened. So it’s heartening to see some of the regulars from that time coming back and looking happy that we’ve set shop again,” notes Harsha.

The ice creams range between Rs 39 a scoop to Rs 105 for premium varieties. Pabrai’s is located at Shop No 6, Wood Street, Ashoknagar. For details, call 9535006187.
