16-yr-old consumes poison as seniors beat him up

A class 10 student committed suicide by consuming some poison after he was allegedly ragged and beaten up by six seniors in Ramesh Nagar of the district sadar, police said on Monday.

A case has been registered against the six seniors on a complaint filed after Kulraj Bedi, 16, committed suicide on Sunday, they said.

The accused are Nishan Kumar, Akshay Vashishat, Harsimran Walia, Rishav Arora, Sumit Narula, and Sabed.

The accused, students of class 12, are in the age group of 18 to 19 years. They have been booked under the IPC, police said.

Kulraj’s father Vishal Bedi, a revenue official, on Monday alleged that his son was beaten by the accused about three months ago.

“They again beat him up while he was boarding a school bus and tore his school uniform on Saturday. My son was so traumatised and frustrated by the incident that he refused to go to school again,” Bedi said.

“However, we pacified him to go to his school on Monday saying ‘we would ask the school principal to take serious note of the incident’. 

But we had never anticipated that he would go this far and take the extreme step,” he added. Meanwhile, the incident sparked angry reaction from local residents, political activists and social organisations.

They staged a dharna outside the city police station, demanding immediate arrest of the accused. 

They also blocked vehicular traffic for some time.
