State electricity supply companies (Escoms), on Tuesday, signed power purchase agreements with Nuclear Power Corporations of India Limited and Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) for 442 MW and 450 MW of power, respectively.

Following the agreement, supply of 221 mw of power from NPCIL Kudankulam Plant will start from April 2014 in the first phase, and December 2014 in the second phase. Supply from DVC will take couple of months as there is a 765 volt corridor issue between Solapur and Raichur.

Energy Minister D K Shiva-kumar, who was present, said: “This will ensure that there are no power problems in the State. We have got clearance from the Centre to start new thermal power plants in Gulbarga, Bellary and Raichur. We have identified 600 acres in Gulbarga. We have also got clearance to purchase coal and tenders have been called for.”

He said strict action will be taken against power theft and a drive was on to identify the areas prone to power theft.

Kumar Naik, CMD of PCKL, said maintenance works at Raichur Thermal Power Station units are on to ensure that all eight units are working, instead of six or less than that,
